Earthquake Death Toll Every Day!

In a sermon preached by John Piper last Sunday: There are 130,000 babies aborted every day worldwide— as much deadly, murderous destruction as in the Haiti earthquake, but every day.

Gleanings from Reading Genesis, Psalms, Matthew and Acts Genesis 45

     Upon discovering Joseph’s identity, his brothers feared for their lives because they had sold him into slavery years before.  Joseph’s assuring response to them: God is sovereign!  “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt.  And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, FOR GOD SENT ME BEFORE YOU TO PRESERVE LIFE”  (Genesis 45:4-5). And at the close of Genesis, when his brothers fear again because their father has died, Joseph reiterates, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?  As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today” (Genesis 50:19-20).

Psalm 19     Do I believe this about the Scriptures?  Do you?  “More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold” (Psalm 19:10).

Psalm 22    The end-goal of gospel missions— pray and labor for this!  “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.  For kingship belongs to the LORD, and He rules over the nations” (Psalm 22:27-28).

Matthew 9   Psalm 22:27-28 connects here.  “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:37-38). Lord, grant to us at Rocky that such praying prevails and such laborers are raised up from among us!

Acts    God’s choice on us does not preclude suffering.  “[Saul] is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.  For I will show him much he must suffer for the sake of my name” (Acts 9:15-16).

Acts    Church Growth in 9:31--  “And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, [the church] multiplied.”

A Call to Prayer and a Poem

Gleanings from Reading through the Bible

I’m reading through God’s Word this year using the Discipleship Journal plan.  Let me encourage you to begin doing so—it’s not too late—by using one of many good plans.

Here are highlights from my reading thus far:

From Genesis: What is the Bible about?  Or Whom?  The very first chapter contains the name of God 32 times in the span of 31 verses.

From the Psalms: There is evil all around.  What is God’s response?  “God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.  If a man does not repent, God will whet His sword; He has bent and readied His bow; He has prepared for Him His deadly weapons, making His arrows fiery shafts.” (Psalm 7:12-13)

From Matthew: A reminder constantly needed from Jesus—“You cannot serve God and money.” (Matthew 6:24)

From Acts: How to respond to opposition as a Christian—call on the sovereign God!  “They lifted their voices together to God and said, ‘Sovereign Lord…” (Acts 4:24)

God Is Faithful

God is faithful to His people.  He is trustworthy.  He never changes.  What encouragement and comfort God’s faithfulness is to us as we embark upon 2010.

As time seems to fly by and the world roils about in increasing turmoil, this is a steady, firm place to focus and rest—God is faithful!  I am reminded of Isaiah 26:3-4—“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.  Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.”

And of this old hymn:

“Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,

Over all victorious in its bright increase;

Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day;

Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.”

Refrain

“Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed;

Finding as He promised, perfect peace and rest.”

“Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,

Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;

Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care;

Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.”

“Every joy or trial falleth from above,

Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love;

We may trust Him fully all for us to do;

They who trust wholly find Him wholly true.”
